Mercedes, Audi, Porsche Working On Electric Cars In Response Tesla

According to interviews given to German publication Manager Magazine (Google translate) this week, sources from Porsche, Mercedes, and Audi said that they are all readying electric cars to respond “to the success of the Californian newcomer Tesla with its Model S.”

Porsche’s chairman Matthias Müller reportedly said that the company is working on an all-electric car that will be based on the company’s Modular Standard Platform (Modularer Standardantrieb-Baukasten in German, or MSB for short) and look similar to the company’s Panamera (which has already been introduced with a hybrid electric engine).

Mercedes sources also told the publication that the company had a Tesla competitor in the works, but the projected timeline for such a car is further out; an all-electric sedan won’t be ready until 2021, sources say. According to the blog Gas2, Mercedes’ battery is currently too big to fit in the car maker’s current models, so some redesigning will reportedly be necessary.

And its well-known that Audi is further along in building an electric car aimed at potential Tesla buyers. The recently announced Audi Q8 e-tron, for example, is anticipating a release in 2017. But the Q8 won’t compete with Tesla’s current Model S, industry watchers say; instead, with that car, Audi has its sights on the Model X SUV that Tesla intends to ship in March 2015.

VIDEO: How The US Navy Creates Fuel From Seawater

This might sound like something from the far end of the sci-fi fantasy spectrum but the US Navy can now produce gasoline starting with seawater. Unfortunately this isn’t quite as exotically strange as it sounds, nor is it quite the Holy Grail of beating climate change. It’s pretty cool for the purposes the Navy wants it for, this is true, but it’s not about to become a general technique in wide use.

NYC Marathon Back On It’s Feet

Two years ago New York Road Runners was the object of intense public scorn for dragging its feet before canceling the annual New York City Marathon in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

The running club is moving beyond this painful chapter by embracing its host city more than ever, with marketing slogans like “Get your New York on.” It is also emphasizing technology as it produces the first marathon with its new title sponsor, Tata Consultancy Services. Based in India, the information-technology conglomerate inked an eight-year deal with NYRR last year, helping the club erase a post-Sandy financial deficit on an operating budget of about $61 million. TCS succeeded Dutch financial firm ING.

“Between the combination of Sandy and then what happened in Boston [the 2013 bombings at that city’s marathon], we all appreciate to a whole other level the precious opportunity we have to run on these streets and to celebrate the city,” said Mary Wittenberg, chief executive of NYRR.

With the TCS New York City Marathon taking place on Nov. 2, the new partners are eager to show that Sandy is in the rearview mirror—though not forgotten—and that what defines the race now is its high-tech features.

This week, the partners will unveil the first of these initiatives. Among them are four digital clocks at a souped-up finish line that will track the running times of the four waves of runners, an upgrade from a clock that simply tracked the first wave’s finish times.
